Thanks for visiting uncommon good—and welcome.
This is a place for essays and podcast conversations that explore what works in health care…and what doesn’t.
Together, we’ll use everyday metaphors to challenge conventional thinking, question intuition, and look at familiar problems from a different perspective. Along the way, we’ll explore unmet needs—including the medical consequences of the social determinants of health.
If we do our job well, perhaps we’ll leave things just a little better than we found them.
Want to know what uncommon good is, what it stands for, and why it exists?
Don’t read. Listen.
In just over two minutes, I’ll tell you why uncommon good exists, and what I hope you’ll find here.

When you’re finished listening, I’d love for you to read The Missed Goodbye. I wrote it for, and about, my dad. I think it captures both the spirit of these essays and the reason I began writing them.
A Missed Goodbye
It occurred to me that some of you reading these essays might wonder why I write so much about what’s wrong with health care. The short answer is because I’m so sure we can do better. The longer answer is more personal.
